On Monday 15th Feb 2010, 6 scouts from Accrington St Pauls Barnfield Scouts helped to give Bowley a bit of TLC. During their 6 hours in the wet, they cleared out the gas container storage unit which they did a smashing job. This day went towards gaining their Chief Scout gold award by them all completing their community challenge badge. Some of the scouts where unable to make the Monday so went down to bowley on the Saturday to clear out the pond.

Skiing

A few of St Pauls Barnfield Scouts took part in the County Skiing experience night at Pendle Ski Course. This was the first time the group has taken part in a county event and cant wait for another county event. Our scouts loved meeting new friends and laughing at each other trying to stand on skies, never mind the skiing.

Tree Planting

Tree planting on saturday morning with the Cubs & Beavers. We got a grant from the woodland trust and with help from Prospects Foundation we planted 80 trees in the Peel Park area of the Coppice.

Remembrance Parade

On Sunday 8th November members of the Scouts, Cubs and Beavers from St Pauls Scouting group, attended the annual Remembrance day parade. They met at Oakhill park for a service of Remembrance and to observe the two minutes silence. They then took part in the parade from the park to the town centre. Here the Mayor received a salute from the many organisations in attendance. It was lovely to see do many representatives of the group there. Thank you to those who attended.

Winter Camp

From the 30th October to 1st of November St Paul's Barnfield Scouts took part in their Winter Camp. Instead of me doing a write up we have decided that the Scouts can work towards their writers badge by submitting reviews on the special events that we take part in.

Radio Show

St Pauls Barnfield Scouts created their own radio show called A-Z show on Goss Fm at Accrington Academy on 27th October 2009. They had the opportunity of working with the Goss FM DJ, Mark. They learnt about radio by answering questions such as 'Why Radio?', 'How do we listen?', What types of radio?' etc. This gave them an overview about Radio.

They had to work out who was going to do which roles in the show, this ranged from the shows producer down to those being interviewed. The had to decide on the content from the show:-
News, Sport, Weather, What's On, Chit Chat, Special Guests and the Songs.

The shows producer had to work out what the running order is going to be and learn all of the controls on the radio desk. He had to pick the identity tags, how long the item of the show was going to last, which songs to choose in order to make sure that the show was 25minutes long, so that we did not over run.

While the shows producer was doing this the others where preparing their parts of the show by using the national and local news papers to gather news, up to date sport details, weather and the local what's on events that where happening over the kids holidays.

Once everyone had gathered their material they had to have a practice to make sure that they did not over run the timings on their parts. Then it was ready for the real thing - the Live show.

At 1 o'clock it was the scouts turn on the radio doing their A-Z show at Accrington Academy. The show, minus the songs played can be found here.

The leaders also enjoyed the scouts enthusiasm and commitment to the show and feel that they got a lot out of the day. The pictures can be found in our gallery.

As part of their writes badge the Scouts were asked to complete a write up of the days events.

Sports Day

St Pauls Barnfield Scouts took part in their first ever district scouting event on Sunday 4th October. The event took place at Bowley Scout Camp. We entered a team of 6 scouts in various events. They took part in a variety of events, that are not necessarily your usual sports day events.

In the morning there were 4 events - archery, rifle shooting, curling and orienteering. We had mixed results in these coming 6th in the rifle shooting, 5th in curling and 1st in both orienteering and archery. The Scouts were up against some very tough opposition in some of the events and made us feel proud. It shows how well they have been progressing in some of the events they have done before but it also shows that they are willing to try even the more unusual and unfamiliar events. These results were very impressive for our small group who have not had the opportunity to try these events before - but we will be trying them in future.

After lunch we took part in the five a side football tournament. It was held in a league format. Even though we didn't win this element we had a good go and were only beaten once. We won 2 and drew 2. Maybe now we will have to give the Scouts the opportunity to play football, occasionally!

After the football came the presentation of the trophies and medals from the day. We were awarded our winners trophies from the orienteering and the archery. Even though we did not win overall it was the taking part that counted and the Scouts really seemed to enjoy taking part in these events. Let's hope that next year we can do as well!

District Camp

The weekend of Friday 11th to Sunday 13th September saw a quiet time for some of the parents of the Cubs from St Paul's Barnfield. It was the District Cub Camp at Bibby's Farm near Chorley. There were Cubs from various areas within Hyndburn at the event which was designed to bring together the Cubs from the district. The aim of the event was to allow the Cubs to meet other Cubs while learning new skills and having fun.

There was lots to do including Friday nights Wide Game in the dark. The cubs had to find hidden leaders around the site and collect signatures. It sounds so much fun! They had to run around the site in small groups in the hunt of the leaders but it was not quite that simple - the leaders were on the move.

Saturday saw the Cubs taking part in a series of challenges covering various different Cub skills such as fire lighting and pioneering as well as trying their hands at Archery and other events. The Cubs were split into small groups and had to progress around the bases getting to try everything.

Litter Pick

Summer Camp

What a week! We have just returned from the most action packed Summer Camp ever. It was an amazing 5 days of excitement and adventure!

Summer Camp was a massive event. It united the Cubs and Brownies from St Paul's. The cubs and a few Brownies slept in tents and used a night loo (they thought it was hilarious to use but weren't so impressed when it was their turn to empty it!) The weather was occasionally wet,but rain and mud all add to the fun for these intrepid gentlemen!

The cubs took part in some amazing adventurous activities, these included the crate challenge and the rock climbing (any reviews of these would be much appreciated)! There were also more sedate activites, for example space hoppers and scooters. There were lots of other activities available and they only lasted 2 days!

The first day was all about settling in. The second day we had a morning of crafts where the cubs made bugs and flowers to decorate the outside of the building. In the afternoon it was the less adventurous of the activities - the grass sledging and the lawn games to name a few! Wednesday was a busy day we walked to Edisford Bridge where we had a picnic and fun in the sun before a swim in the pool to relax! A perfect end to the day was a rather warm camp fire!

Thursday was also very busy. The Cubs and leaders took part in a Big Cook Little Cook challenge - French Bread Pizza followed by the amazing Chocolate Pizza. After lunch we took part in the more adventurous of the activities, the rock climbing, abseiling, low ropes and archery.

The day ended in a party. Not just any party though, it was themed on Britains Got Talent. Throughout the week the gents were given the opportunity to perfect an act to perform before the waiting crowd! Congratulations to R.C.C who was came second with their performance on guitar and took home a fantastic kite! Check out our gallery to see if you can recognise any of our famous visitors!

Our final day was Friday. It was eviction day from the Big Brother House and the Cubs tidied out their tents before being collected at 11am, all looking very tired! On the whole it was an amazing week thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended! Backwoods Camp

The Scout Camp for this summer took place at Ashworth Valley Scout Camp in Rochdale on the weekend of 7th to 9th August. The theme of the Camp was the Great Outdoors. It was focused on the Backwoods Survival methods of early scouting.

The Scouts arrived on the Friday afternoon and had to set up camp, they had to pitch their tents and create a cooking shelter in case of rain, a chopping area had to be set up and they had to mark out the camp boundaries. We saved them from having to set up toilet tents as the site had adequate facilities.

Friday night was the scouts first challenge. Having set up camp we went down into the woods to practice the skills we would need for Saturdays survival event. Then tea time. Time for the leaders to relax - the Scouts were making tea. Good old camp stew! The tea was shockingly edible and no-one came down with food poisoning!

Saturday morning was the beginning of the fun. We left our camp and headed to the Camp Site's specially designated Backwoods area high up in the trees. Here, having made Breakfast before we moved, the Scouts (and the leaders) had to show how much they had taken on-board in the last few months by constructing their own shelters in which they would spend Saturday night (providing we didn't suffer adverse weather, i.e snow storm or forest fire). They then had to set up their second campsite completely by building camp gadgets.

Saturday night saw our very own camp fire. The Scouts joined in and sang along to some familiar and unfamiliar camp fire songs. The Scouts then went to bed in their rustic, home-made shelters, praying it would not rain.

Sunday morning everyone got up and the Scouts shelters were still standing! The rain had not appeared and everyone was in good spirits. Breakfast was followed by the de-camp of both sites. Then after a bite to eat it was time to go home. We have been assured the Scouts were completely worn out following the camp, as were the leaders! Sausage Sizzle

On Tuesday 14th July the Cubs and Beavers held a Sausage Sizzle at Bowley Scout Camp in Great Harwood to celebrate the end of their term. The Brownies were invited to join them and out sing them at their campfire but only 5 Brownies turned and were outsung by us at our indoor campfire!

We were invited to help build the campfire while the sausages were cooking on our new Barbeque that has been bought by the leaders with the proceeds of their fundraising efforts! As the sausages were cooking the clouds came over. We were quickly hurried inside and as the last person entered the Lodge at Bowley the rain started and didn't stop for an hour. The leaders used the indoor facilities to cook the sausages and everyone was sat in a circle where we had roaring renditions of some familiar camp fire songs. Then it was food time - sausage buns with ketchup and drinks.

Before the end of the night one of the Cubs took part in his moving up ceremony, while the rain had stopped. He was celebrating his final night as a Cub and will be joining the Scouts in September.

Church Parade

Following the Church service at St Pauls Barnfield Church we took the Brownies and Cubs for a walk and a picnic in the glorious sunshine. We walked from the institute to the park at the bottom of the Coppice where we were encourages to stop and enjoy the sun by the Brownies and Cubs. We sat and watched while the Cubs played in the park, and on the grass in the surrounding areas. They also spent a period of time rolling down a grassy slope and even managed to get Kaa and Baghera involved in the fun!

At 12pm we sat and ate our picnic, the sun still beaming on us! The Cubs then played for another hour before we decided to walk home. The decision was made that we would walk half way up the Coppice before walking past the pond and home. This seemed reasonable enough until someone turned a tap on above us. We had been walking for 5 minutes when it began to drizzle. Within 2 minutes the rain was torrential. We tried walking fasted but we still got wet! We returned to the Institute at about 20 past 2 and were greeted by lots of laughing parents. Thankfully everyone seemed to find it amusing, even the leaders who were soaked to the skin!

Sleep Over

Beavers went to Ashworth Valley on Saturday 13 June for Hyndburn District Beaver Sleepover. The theme was 'pirates'. They made various crafts, (bandana's, boats , bookmarks). Did pirate themed games. Went to a campfire, heard a pirate story from Captain Tadpole! Watched a pirate DVD and stayed up til midnight! On Sunday they did a treasure hunt and had a water fight with the explorers who were dressed as pirates (brilliant!). A fabulous time was had by everybody
